SOP for a Computer Science / IT master's

What this paragraph does: Open with a specific technical spark, not "since childhood I loved computers". Specificity signals a real applicant.

What this paragraph does: Name the courses that map to the master's — data structures, DBMS, ML, etc. — so the fit is obvious.

I built [project]: [one line on what it does and the stack — e.g. a Django app that automated my family business's billing, used by N people]. I also [internship / hackathon / open-source / freelance work].

What this paragraph does: This is the most important paragraph for a CS SOP. Concrete projects with a stack and an outcome beat any adjective.

I chose [program] at [university] for [specific: a lab, a professor's research, a specialisation track like ML/security, or an industry co-op]. It fills the gap between my current skills and [target role].

What this paragraph does: Point to a named lab, track or faculty. Show you read the curriculum.

My goal is to work as a [role — e.g. data engineer / ML engineer] and, in the longer term, [next step]. This program gives me the [specific skills] that role requires.

What this paragraph does: Name the role. A clear target makes the whole SOP coherent.

With a solid foundation, real projects and a clear goal, I am ready to contribute to and gain from [program] at [university]. Thank you for considering my application.

What this paragraph does: Short and confident. Tie back to foundation + projects + goal.

• Lead with projects and results — a link or a one-line outcome (users, accuracy, time saved) is worth a paragraph of adjectives.
• Map your undergrad courses to the master's curriculum so the fit is obvious.
• Avoid buzzword stuffing; name the actual tools and problems you worked with.
