Study-abroad intakes (Fall, Spring, Summer) by country

Quick answer. Universities admit students in intakes (seasons), not year-round. The main ones are Fall (the largest, starting Aug–Sep), Spring/Winter (starting Jan–Feb) and a smaller Summer intake (around May) in some countries. Canada has Fall/Winter/Summer; the UK mainly September with a January intake; Australia's main intakes are February and July; the USA has Fall and Spring; Germany has Winter (Oct) and Summer (Apr); Ireland mainly September. Apply several months ahead of your chosen intake and confirm dates with each university.

The three intakes

Fall is the primary intake with the widest choice of courses, scholarships and seats. Spring/Winter is a good second option with fewer seats. Summer is smaller and offered by some institutions for select programmes. Popular courses in a smaller intake fill fast, so applying to Fall usually gives the best odds.

Main intake seasons by country

Indicative — always confirm the exact intake and deadline on the university's site:

UKSeptember (main), January
AustraliaFebruary and July (main); some November
USAFall (Aug–Sep), Spring (Jan)

Frequently asked questions

Which intake is best to apply for?
The Fall intake (around August–September) is the largest, with the most courses, scholarships and seats, so it usually gives the best options and odds. Spring/January is a solid alternative if you need more time or miss Fall deadlines. Choose based on your readiness and the course's availability.
Can I still apply if I missed the Fall intake?
Yes — most destinations have a Spring/Winter (Jan–Feb) intake and some a Summer one, though with fewer seats and courses. Rather than rush a weak Fall application, it is often better to target the next intake with a strong, complete file. Confirm the specific intake with each university.
