Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band calculated?
The overall band is the average of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band. There is one official quirk: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0.
Do I need the same score in every section?
Not for the overall band — but many universities and visa routes set a minimum in each section too (for example 6.0 in each, or no band below 5.5). Check both the overall and the per-section requirement on your offer letter and the official immigration site.
Can this calculator raise my real score?
No — it only shows how your four section scores combine into the overall band. Your official IELTS Test Report Form is the only score that counts. Use it to see how close you are to a target and which section to focus on.
