What changed when SDS closed

Until late 2024, eligible students from India and other countries could use the Student Direct Stream for faster processing if they met fixed criteria (a set GIC and language score). On 8 November 2024 IRCC ended SDS. Everyone now applies through the standard study-permit stream, which reviews financial and other documents individually rather than against the old fixed SDS checklist.

The steps now

1) Get an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI). 2) Obtain a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL), which most applicants now need. 3) Gather proof of funds (see the checklist guide). 4) Take any required English test. 5) Complete a medical exam and biometrics if asked. 6) Apply online through IRCC and wait for a decision. Because it is the regular stream, build in extra time versus the old SDS route.

How long it takes

The old SDS route was fast; the regular stream is generally slower and varies by country and time of year. Apply well before your course start date. IRCC publishes current processing-time estimates — check them for your country when you apply rather than relying on any fixed figure.
