Education loans for studying abroad from Punjab: how they work
Secured vs unsecured
A secured (collateral) loan is backed by property, an FD or similar, usually gives a larger amount at a lower rate, and is common for public-bank loans. An unsecured loan needs no collateral but is typically smaller, costlier, and leans heavily on the co-applicant's income and your course/university. Many families combine a bank secured loan with an NBFC or international lender for the balance.
What lenders check
Your admission/offer letter and the course and country; the co-applicant's (usually a parent's) income and credit; the collateral offered; and the total cost of attendance. A strong offer from a well-ranked institution and a solid co-applicant improve both approval and the rate.
Costs, tax and safe borrowing
Compare the interest rate, the moratorium (the study period plus a few months when you pay little or nothing), processing fees and the total repayable — not just the headline rate. Interest paid on an education loan is deductible under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act for up to 8 years. Read every clause, never sign blank forms, and be wary of any agent charging a large fee to "arrange" a loan.
