Proof of funds for a study visa: how much and how to show it

Quick answer. Proof of funds means showing the visa officer you can pay your first-year tuition plus living costs and travel from genuine, traceable money. Each country sets its own living-cost figure — for a single applicant, roughly CAD $22,895 for Canada (plus tuition and travel, from Sept 2025), about £1,171/month outside London (£1,529 in London) held for 28 days for the UK, around AUD $29,710/year for Australia, and a €11,904 blocked account for Germany (2024 figures). The money must be your own or a genuine sponsor's, sit in the account long enough, and match your documents. Always confirm the current figure on the official government page — the numbers change.

How much, by country (verify current figures at source)

These are the living-cost amounts most Punjab applicants ask about. They are in addition to your tuition and, usually, your return travel. Figures change every year, so treat this as a starting point and confirm the current number on the official page linked below before you apply:

What "genuine and traceable" means

Officers look for money that is genuinely yours (or a genuine sponsor's), that has been in the account for the required period, and that has a clear source — salary, business income, sale of property, an education loan, or savings you can explain. A large deposit that appears days before you apply, money you cannot explain, or funds "arranged" by an agent are the fastest routes to a refusal. Never use fake statements or inflated balances; they cause refusals and multi-year bans.

How to show it

Accepted proof usually includes bank statements for the last few months, fixed-deposit certificates, an education-loan sanction letter, a GIC (Canada), a blocked account (Germany), scholarship letters, or a sponsor's affidavit with their own financials. Keep everything consistent with your application forms and statement of purpose, and keep the money in place until your visa is decided — withdrawing it early can undo your case.

A licensed consultant can check the file — but cannot "arrange" funds

A licensed study-visa consultant can tell you exactly which documents your country accepts and spot gaps before you apply. Verify their Punjab Travel Act licence on the official register first. Walk away from anyone who offers to "show" or "arrange" funds you do not have, or promises a guaranteed visa on a weak file — that is fraud, and it rebounds on you, not the agent.

Frequently asked questions

How much bank balance do I need for a Canada study visa?
For a single applicant outside Quebec, Canada expects at least CAD $22,895 for living costs for the first year (effective 1 September 2025), on top of your first-year tuition and travel. A GIC of that amount is one accepted way to show it since the SDS stream closed. Always confirm the current figure on the IRCC financial-support page.
How long must the money stay in my account?
It depends on the country. The UK requires the funds to be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of applying. Others (Canada, Australia) do not set a fixed number of days but expect the money to be genuine and traceable, not a last-minute deposit. Keep the funds in place until your visa is decided.
Can I use an education loan as proof of funds?
Yes — most countries accept an education-loan sanction letter from a recognised bank as proof of funds, often alongside some of your own savings. Confirm your specific country accepts it and get the sanction letter in the required format. A licensed consultant can tell you exactly what your destination expects.
