IELTS band scores explained: what each band means and how it is calculated

Quick answer. IELTS is scored on a 0–9 band scale, in whole and half bands. You get a band for each of the four sections — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. There is no pass or fail; the score you need depends on the university or visa you are applying for.

The 0–9 band scale

Each band describes a level of English, from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). Band 6 is a "competent" user, Band 7 a "good" user, and Band 8 a "very good" user. Most universities abroad ask for somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0 overall. Scores are reported in half bands (6.0, 6.5, 7.0), so there is no such thing as a 6.3.

How your overall band is calculated

You sit four sections and receive a band for each. The overall band is the average of those four, rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 7.0 average to 6.25, which rounds to an overall 6.5.

Academic vs General Training

IELTS Academic is for university study and professional registration. IELTS General Training is for work, migration and school — Canada's Express Entry, for instance, uses General Training. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in both; only Reading and Writing differ. Pick the version your university or visa route asks for.

The test has four parts, taken the same day (Speaking may be a few days apart):

Is there a pass mark in IELTS?

No. IELTS reports a band score, not a pass or fail. The minimum band you need is set by the university or visa you are applying to — commonly 6.0 to 7.0 overall for study abroad.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

IELTS results are normally valid for two years from the test date. Some institutions accept older scores at their discretion — check with them directly.
