What IELTS score do you need for Canada, Australia and the UK?
Typical requirements at a glance
These are common ranges — your actual course may ask for more or less:
| Country | Undergraduate (typical) | Postgraduate (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | 6.0–6.5 overall | 6.5–7.0 overall |
| Australia | 6.0–6.5 overall | 6.5–7.0 overall |
| United Kingdom | 5.5–6.5 overall | 6.5–7.0 overall |
University requirement vs visa requirement
There are two separate bars. Your university sets an admission requirement (often 6.0–7.0). The visa route may set its own English requirement, which can be lower. In practice you must clear the higher of the two, and many courses also cap the minimum per-section score (for example, "no band below 6.0"). Read both requirements before you book a test date.
A note on accuracy
English requirements change and vary by course, so treat the ranges above as a starting point, not a promise. The only authoritative numbers are on the university's own admissions page and the destination country's official immigration website — both linked below. This is general information, not immigration advice.
