IELTS vs PTE: which English test should you take?
The core differences
Both test the same four skills, but the experience and scoring differ:
| IELTS | PTE Academic | |
|---|---|---|
| Scoring | 0–9 band scale | 10–90 scale |
| Format | Paper or computer; Speaking is a face-to-face interview | Fully computer-based; Speaking recorded and machine-scored |
| Results | About 3–13 days | Typically 1–2 days |
| Speaking | With a human examiner | Into a microphone, scored by algorithm |
Which country accepts which
Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts both IELTS and PTE Academic across visa subclasses. For UK visas, IELTS for UKVI is the long-established SELT route, though PTE is also UKVI-approved. For Canadian immigration (Express Entry), IELTS General Training is the most established route, with PTE Core also accepted; for university admission, Canadian institutions widely accept both. Always confirm the exact test each specific university or visa stream requires.
How to choose
Pick PTE if you prefer a fully computer-based test and need fast results. Pick IELTS if you are more comfortable speaking to a person, or if your destination or institution specifically asks for it. Check the requirement of your actual university or visa route first — that decides it more than any general comparison.
