Studying in the USA from Punjab: the F-1 visa step by step
The main steps
Get admission from a SEVP-approved institution, which issues your Form I-20; pay the $350 I-901 SEVIS fee online; complete the DS-160 non-immigrant visa application and pay the visa fee; book and attend the F-1 interview at the US embassy or consulate with your I-20, financial documents and academic records. Apply early — interview slots fill up.
What the interview looks for
Officers assess whether you are a genuine student who can fund the course (the first-year cost is on your I-20), and whether you intend to return to India after study. Bring proof of funds, admission and academic documents, and be able to explain your course choice and plans clearly and honestly.
Choosing an agent safely
A Punjab agent can help with admissions and paperwork, but the visa decision is the consular officer's alone — no agent can guarantee it. Verify the agent's Punjab Travel Act licence on the official register and never sign blank forms or hand over originals without a receipt.
